There are very few buildings in London that stop you in your tracks before you've even reached the first room. Spencer House is one of them.
Built by the1st Earl Spencer following his marriage to Georgiana Poyntz - a love match that shaped every room in the building - it remains one of the most ambitious private palaces ever constructed in London, and one of the finest surviving 18th-century aristocratic townhouses in Europe.
It is also, for a very limited number of events each year, available to hire.
And for those events, we're proud to be one of a small number of accredited florists.
Spencer House is not a venue that happens to be beautiful. It was built to celebrate a marriage. Every room in the house - from the gilded grandeur of the Great Room to the intimate domed architecture of the Palm Room - was conceived as an expression of the Earl's devotion to his new wife.
The Painted Room, considered one of the most important 18th-century interiors in England, is dedicated to the Triumph of Love. The Palm Room's gilded palm fronds were chosen as symbols of marital fertility and happiness.
For a wedding florist, that history is more than just a simple backdrop. It's a brief.
The Great Room is the largest of Spencer House's state rooms, designed for grand receptions and to display the Spencer family's collection of old master paintings.
Sage green walls, an elaborate gilded coffered ceiling, crystal chandeliers and a marble fireplace - it's a room of considerable scale and formality, and one that demands an equally considered floral response.
The approach that works here is abundance held in check. A long mirrored dining table dressed with a cascading runner of blush and ivory garden roses - spilling from the table to the floor, threaded with deep burgundy dahlias and accents of deeper pink - creates something generous and romantic without competing with the room's extraordinary art.
Tall glass taper candelabras rise above the floral mass, drawing the eye upward towards the gilded ceiling. Gold circular-back chairs and gold cutlery complete a palette that feels entirely at home in a room like this.
The instinct in a space this grand is to match it with something equally theatrical. The better instinct is to bring warmth - colour, candlelight and flowers that make a palatial room feel like somewhere a real celebration is happening.
If the Great Room is Spencer House's most impressive space, the Palm Room is its most extraordinary. Eight gilded palm trees, carved from wood, soar up to support a domed coffered ceiling - an interior unlike anything else in London.
Classical statues stand in arched niches. The green and gold palette of the room is so specific, so complete, that any floral design has to take its cue from the architecture itself rather than imposing a palette from outside.
Here, the cascade approach works beautifully in a different register. Blush and ivory roses massed on a mirrored gold table, spilling to the floor in a generous sweep, allow the architecture to remain the hero while the flowers add the warmth and softness the room's formality calls for.
It's the room that stops every guest. Our job is simply to make sure the flowers are worthy of it.
Spencer House operates with a very limited number of events per year, and its accredited supplier list reflects that exclusivity.
