Some events earn a permanent place in the calendar. Walpole's Annual Chair & CEO Dinner is one of them - a gathering of leaders from across the British luxury industry, held each year in surroundings that match the occasion.
This year, we returned to the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park to dress the tables, and it's a commission we look forward to every time.
The ballroom at the Mandarin Oriental is a room that makes demands of any floral design. Gilded plasterwork, crystal chandeliers, arched mirrors and cream panelling trimmed in gold - there's a lot of detail to work alongside, and the temptation to compete with it has to be resisted.
The approach here was warmth over grandeur. Low, generous centrepieces that sat within the conversation rather than above it, keeping the room feeling intimate despite the scale.
The palette was built around hot pink, peach, orange, green and white - vivid enough to hold their own against the gilded room, considered enough to feel fresh rather than loud. Garden roses and peonies formed the heart of each arrangement, their full, layered blooms spilling outward alongside sweet peas, lisianthus and hydrangea in softer blush and coral tones. Green anthurium leaves added an unexpected structural note, cutting cleanly through the softness of the flowers.
The detail that gives these centrepieces their particular character is the fruit - peaches, nectarines and oranges nestled in at table level, tucked naturally among the stems. It's a choice that shifts the arrangements from purely decorative to something more textural and abundant, a quiet nod to the summer season without needing to say it directly.
Each centrepiece was paired with a slim brass table lamp, its warm glow setting the tone for an evening designed for conversation rather than spectacle.
There's a particular discipline required when working in a space this ornate. The gilded cartouches, the mirrored arches, the chandeliers overhead - none of it needs help. What it needs is a counterpoint: something living and seasonal and slightly unruly that stops a formal room from feeling static. Hot pinks and peachy oranges do that work well.
They're confident without being jarring, and they catch the candlelight in a way that cooler palettes simply don't.
It's why we tend to favour this kind of saturated, fruit-forward approach for evening corporate events in traditional settings. Restraint has its place, but so does a room that feels genuinely alive when guests walk in.
